The first sidebranch instability of dendritic structures

Directional solidification studies have been carried out in succinonitrile-acetone system to study the location at which the first sidebranch perturbation occurs during the formation of dendritic structures. A scaling law of the form, lambda /SUB p/ = 0.56 lambda /sub 1/ lambda /sub 2/ is found, which is independent of experimental conditions in the dendritic growth regime.
