Analysis of diamond-turned reflective optics

A single-crystal diamond cutting tool and a turning machine, modified to improve tool-path control, have been combined to produce the highly reflective and accurate mirror surfaces needed for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory's ANTARES laser fusion experiment. Mirrors with a contour accuracy of 890 nanometers (35 ..mu..in) and a surface finish of 89 nanometers (3.5 ..mu..in), peak to valey, have been produced. It would be prohibitively expensive to produce mirrors with these degrees of accuracy by conventional lapping and polishing tecniques.
