Experimental investigation of apparatuses for electrical braking of 215 MW hydroelectric generators

The design, operation and performance of electric braking device for electric generators in hydroelectric power plants are discussed. Tests performed to determine the efficiency and parameters of the basic equipment for electrical braking devices and to investigate the electromechanical transient processes and to compare experimental and calculated results are described. It was found that the reliability of operation and the speed of the power portion of the electric braking device on generator voltage is fairly high. The activation time and shutoff time of the resistors without accounting for the detection portion of the control scheme does not exceed 0.04 s. A significant change in resistances of the resistors from the moment of installation of the braking device, even without activation under load was found. This results in a need during operation to monitor the resistances of the resistors and, if necessary, correct the controlling effects from the braking device. Calculations and experimental studies confirmed the fairly high efficiency of the braking devices of hydroelectric generators at the Zeiskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant under conditions of the existing scheme for power transmission. Similar devices can be recommended for use at power plants where there is a severe problem with regard to dynamic stability. (LCL)
