As an aid in the design of semisubmersible drilling vessels, Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., Inc., presents a method of predicting the absolute or relative riser and vessel motions and their subsequent interactions. Made with the assumption that the riser oscillatory motions are entirely caused by the vessel motions, the predicted velocities and acclerations are greatly influenced by water depth, interactions of amplitudes and phase angles of the vessel motions, and interactions of the vessel motions and particle orbital motions. The method is also applicable to such design considerations as the joint motions of a pipelaying vessel and stinger, top motions of mooring lines, and restraints for deck packages and drilling equipment that are sensitive to vessel accelerations.
