Identification and analysis of cosmic gamma ray bursts from Pioneer Venus Orbiter
A search of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) Gamma Burst Detector real time data was carried out to identify and study the characteristics of celestial gamma ray bursts. Each of the 5 channels of the detector were analyzed to determine the time width, rise time, and hardness ratio of the bursts. Solar flares and cosmic gamma ray bursts located by similar criteria are separated by hardness ratio and equivalent time width. Three new bursts GB861023, GB861123, and GB870127 seen on the PVO real time data tapes from 1978 to 1988 may be members of a possible new repeating gamma ray burst 6-13-79. Distances to and spatial distributions of gamma ray burst sources are studied with log N(is greater than P sub c)-log P(sub c), log N(is greater than P)-log P, and log N(is greater than S)-log S. Two hundred seventeen new cosmic gamma ray bursts and 126 solar flares not detected by the PVO gamma ray burst detector in the trigger mode were found.
