To optimize performance of a reciprocating gas compressor, design changes in the cylinder and valves can achieve small efficiency gains that can save tens of thousands of fuel dollars. To date, methods to prove out component changes -- field testing and closed loops -have impeded optimizing compressor design. To overcome the shortcomings, Ingersoll-Rand's Gas Compressor Division has built what it believes to be the most advanced closed loop test facility in the industry -- one that tests with the same gases, flows, pressures, and power in the field. This article describes the facility and its operation and itemizes the benefits derived from its use.
