Three nuclear inquiris conclude in Canada

Journal Article · · Environment; (United States)
OSTI ID:6264632
Different conclusions were reached in 1978 by three Canadian inquiries into whether nuclear-fuel-cycle operations should be expanded. The reports were expected to set the tone for the nuclear industry's near-term plans in Canada. A proposed uranium hexafluoride plant at Port Granby became the first project to be rejected on environmental grounds, while a study of expanded uranium mining in Saskatchewan was favorable toward the project and hostile to environmentalists. The third study, an examination of power generation in Ontario, called for a slower rate of expansion. Arguments of the two conflicting reports are discussed in detail. The Porter Commission's findings on electricity production will be covered in a later article.
