New detente: poor lands and the TNCs

Transnational corporations (TNCs) and less developed countries (LDCs), after years of accusations and bad feelings, are now seeing the possibilities of mutual benefit in their relationships. The shift in attitude is attributed to direct foreign investment in the Third World, as well as to an increase of TNC's based in the Third World, more flexibility among Western-based TNC's and a stronger negotiating position in Third World capitals. Lagging foreign aid programs and world economic problems have added to the demand for direct foreign investment in LDC's. Support for these conclusions is found in economic analyses of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
