The US DOE-Richland Operations Office manages Hanford Site on the Columbia River. Preservation of water quality and the status of endemic plants and animals is important. The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is surveying streams throughout the Columbia Basin to determine the status of the Columbia pebblesnail (Fluminicola columbiana) and the shortface lanx (Fisherola nuttalli), two mollusc species that may only live in the Hanford Site.
