The House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs supports the intent of H.R. 2635, which would permit the states of Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin to form the Midwest Interstate Low-Level Radioactive Waste Compact. The committee suggests amendments to the bill to allow the ratified members and those which become eligible to cooperate on a regional basis with the handling and storage of low-level wastes. The report describes several conditions for the interstate compact system, then gives a section-by-section analysis of the bill. Although new facilities may increase waste-disposal costs, the committee sees no inflationary effects as a result of the regional approach.
