Recognizing the energy-conservation potential and advantages of an onsite heat-activated heat pump, the American Gas Association initiated a program directed toward the development of a gas heat pump long before the energy crisis became a pressing public concern. The program has matured to the point of establishing three concepts in hardware development: the Stirling/Rankine, Brayton/Rankine, and Organic Absorption systems, all intended for residential-commercial application except the Brayton, which is for commercial applications only. The annual Seasonal Performance Factor (defined as the ratio of the heat delivered to or removed from a building over a season divided by the fuel consumed by the heating-cooling system over a season), as estimated for a two-story 1800-sq-ft home in a Mid-Atlantic area city with a heating season of about 5000 degree-days, is placed at 0.84-1.00 for a Stirling, 0.87-1.00 for a Brayton, and 0.83 for an Organic Absorption heat pump vs. 0.59 for an advaringing a unit on line and into operation. The survey also focused on the experience of compressoe interface, whe blood so that the no-response level in children seems to be lower than 10 ..mu..g/100 ml of Pb-B.
