Proposed coal mining and power production of the Kansk-Achinsk Basin

Journal Article · · Int. Geol. Rev.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6259914
A major coal and power project is planned for the Kansk-Achinsk Basin, in the Trans-Siberian Railroad zone between the cities of Achinsk and Kansk. Kansk-Achinsk lignite is a lower-ranking coal than the Ekibastuz product and, because of its low heating value and a tendency to self-ignite in the air, has had a limited local market. The only prospect of making use of the vast reserves in the lignite basin is to upgrade the lignite through some form of processing, converting it to synthetic fuel or burning it in mineside power stations. Research and development efforts in both beneficiation and synthetic fuels are under way.
