Recently, two conferences on ozone took place; both addressed-but were not confined to-the subject of the ambient air quality standard for ozone: the problem of non-attainment of present standards and the use of modeling approaches that could predict the necessary reduction of precursors. At both it was signaled that the impact of ozone in the free troposphere on ambient levels should not be disregarded in control strategies for ambient ozone. In November 1987 a conference was held in Hartford, Connecticut which primarily addressed the problem of non-attainment of the air quality standard for ozone and EPA's regulatory response to this situation. In May 1988 a conference was held in Nijmegen. The Netherlands to provide a state-of-the-art of ozone research and to document this as a source for future policy development. Some observations made at both symposia, with respect to present knowledge of tropospheric ozone are presented.
