  1. GE Nuclear Energy, San Jose, CA (United States)
The GE Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) is based upon a design incorporating the best proven features from the operating BWR fleet worldwide, combined with the broad-scope application of leading edge technologies. Due to the pace of technological advances in the monitoring, control, and instrumentation areas over the last ten years, the advances in the ABWR designs for plant monitoring and control are among the most revolutionary. In addition, the design goals of the ABWR (minimize plant construction, operating, and maintenance costs while maximizing plant electrical output) match the set of challenges facing the utilities which operate current BWRs. Utilizing the design engineering which backs the ABWR, along with the construction and operating experience which will be gained in the lead ABWR units in Japan, provides a unique opportunity to reapply the ABWR design concepts for plant monitoring and control to produce a revolutionary set of upgrade solutions for the operating BWR plant fleet.
