The author analyzes the multifaceted changes that occurred in the U.S. petroleum industry between 1954 and 1982. In this analysis he provides further insight into an industry that is so vital to America's economic growth. He discusses all of the structural transformations within the industry from an analytical perspective. Beginning with the decline of the U.S. multinational oil companies in the world petroleum market, he continues with an assessment of the growth of domestic production and the establishment of numerous firms. He details the increase in mergers and acquisitions and the extent of company diversification in the industry. Finally, he underscores the important implications of the abolition of many of the regulatory directives faced by the industry. He presents more than fifty tables that graphically demonstrate the size and distribution of firms and indices of diversification in the U.S. petroleum industry.
