Recent experience with implementation of nuclear digital feedwater controls
- Science Applications International Corp., Atlanta, GA (United States)
SAIC and The Foxboro Company have been working together for four years to help utilities solve nuclear plant control system problems. As a result, we are now in the final testing phases of our fifth nuclear plant digital feedwater control system upgrade. Brunswick Units 1 and 2 (CP&L) and Hope Creek (PSE&G) were installed earlier this year and are now operating at full power. Browns Ferry Units 2 and 3 are currently undergoing dynamic Factory Acceptance Testing prior to shipment to TVA this Fall. These five systems utilize the Foxboro Intelligent Automation (I/A) Series Hardware and Software. This fault tolerant digital equipment has been designed to virtually eliminate the chance of a hardware failure causing a plant upset. In addition, these DFCS projects all utilize a benchmarked Plant Simulation Model to dynamically test the I/A system and demonstrate acceptable plant transient response prior to installation and startup. The purpose of this paper is to briefly summarize this experience and describe the lessons learned from these projects. The following topics will be discussed to accomplish this objective: system requirements and design process; Brunswick installation and startup; Hope Creek dynamic testing; Browns Ferry plant simulation model; and conclusion and lessons learned.
