Reactions of uranium hexafluoride photolysis products
This paper confirms that the ultraviolet photolysis reactions of UF/sub 6/ in the B band spectral region is simple bond cleavage to UF/sub 5/ and F. The photolysis products may either recombine to UF/sub 6/ or the UF/sub 5/ may dimerize, and ultimately polymerize, to solid UF/sub 5/ particles. We use four methods to set an upper limit for the rate constant for recombination of k/sub r/<2.0 x 10/sup -12/cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/. We measure the rate constant for UF/sub 5/ dimerization to be k/sub d/ = (1.0 +- 0.2) x 10/sup -11/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/. The principal method employed in these studies is the use of diode lasers to monitor, in real time, the changes in density of the species UF/sub 6/ and UF/sub 5/ after laser photolysis of the UF/sub 6/ gas sample.
