Recent high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra for the high-temperature superconductors are analyzed on the basis of a Fermi-liquid-based theory of a highly correlated metal. Due to the presence of large many-body effects, the energy range over which typical Landau Fermi-liquid properties hold is negligibly small. The theoretically calculated spectrum, near the Fermi energy, is dominated by the self-energy variation over an intermediate range of energies. The spectrum is compared and contrasted with other theories as well as with the experimental data.
