System to evaluate the influence of chronic exposure to CO on the hatching eggs of the White Leghorn chicken
Journal Article

· J. Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
CO added to a controlled-atmosphere incubation chamber reduced hatching of eggs from 78.8 +- 13.9% for controls to 62.5 +- 16.8% at 100 ppM CO and 13.2 +- 12.9% (estimate) at 200 ppM CO. Non-hatching eggs showed red discoloration and petechial hemorrhages. Chicks that did hatch after CO exposure frequently exhibited partially absorbed yolks and poorly closed umbilical openings.
