The objective of this investigation was to develop a correlation between the plutonium concentration, the strontium concentration, and the concentration of certain gamma emitters in areas contaminated by the Chernobyl accident. For some time after the accident, Cerium 144 activity was used to estimate these activities, but with a half-life of 284 days, this method has ceased to be useful. Cesium 137 was investigated as an alternative, and it was found that both the strontium and plutonium concentration could be adequately described by this method.
