Toxicity of ozone. I. Acute toxicity

Journal Article · · Ind. Med. Surg.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6251880
Mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and cats were exposed to 2 to 60 ppM O/sub 3/ (by wt) administered in exposure chamber or by funnel. Mortality was observed 1 wk after exposure. Death was usually from edema- and hemorrhage-induced asphyxiation. LD/sub 50/ for 186 2-month-old mice was 21 ppM for 3 hr; 2.18 ppM for 88 2-month-old rats; 51.7 ppM for 63 2- to 3-month-old guinea pigs; 36 ppM for 38 rabbits; and 34.5 ppM for 14 cats. Subacute toxicity was assessed by wet to dry lung wt ratio after exposure to O/sub 3/ for 18 hr. Guinea pigs had hemorrhagic lungs at 6 ppM and rats had such edema at 5 ppM. 3.3 ppM or less for 24 hr had no damaging effect on rat lungs.
