Examination of the initial activity behavior of a series of alumina-supported catalysts of various Ni and Mo concentrations was carried out to define the involvement of Ni on the initial transformation of molybdenum catalysts. The hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activity of the catalysts was measured using a continuous flow reactor at atmospheric pressure connected to an on-line gas chromatograph. The surface area of the catalysts did not vary significantly with Ni content, hoever, it did change with Mo content. Addition of Ni as a promoter was found to increase remarkably the catalytic activity of the catalyst, and there is a continuous growth in activity to a maximum near concentrations of commercial catalysts (% NiO/% MoO/sub 3/ = 3/10 to 5/15). This positive role of promoter can be related to three effects whereby the promoter inhibits Al/sub 2/(MoO/sub 4/)/sub 3/ formation, inhibits MoS/sub 2/ crystallite growth, and inhibits carbon deposition on the oxide surface, but the promoter role cannot be conclusively defined at this time.
