Recultivation of areas contaminated by radioactive wastes

The uranium mining industry is a major source of ecologically very hazardous natural radionuclides that enter the environment. Most areas so contaminated are near sites where wastes from ore mining and processing are stored. At present, uranium mining is concentrated in eight large mining enterprises. Even though the areas of the impaired lands are relatively small in comparison with other branches of mining, the danger of increased radioactive contamination of the adjacent areas as well as the rising cost of land requires recultivation measures. One of the first experiments on recultivation of wastes has been the conservation of tailings dumps in the towns of Maili-Sai and Gafurov, where the first enterprises for mining and processing uranium ores were set up.
