Reactive power management device assessment: Final report

Induction generators in wind power stations require a large amount of reactive power to operate. As a possible means of improving the power factor, the adaptive power factor controller (APFC) is being developed by the University of Washington under the sponsorship of Bonneville Power Administration and the Southern California Edison Company. The purpose of this EPRI project was threefold: to provide documentation of the APFC design, to compare the device with existing reactive compensation devices and to develop methods for technical and economic evaluation of reactive power controllers. In this report, functional blocks of the latest APFC design are described. Results of a comprehensive literature and patent search are summarized and a comparison is made between the APFC and other existing reactive power control devices. Analytical methods are given for the evaluation of power factor and voltage profiles (with and without the APFC), and fault diagnosis of transducers and SCRs. Reactive compensation leads to higher power factors and reduced line losses. In this report a parametric method is proposed for the cost/benefit analysis of APFC application. 47 refs., 39 figs., 9 tabs.
