Dynamics of coherent modes of a single bunch above the threshold of microwave instability is discussed. The linear and nonlinear theories of bunch stability are presented and compared. It is shown, that normally the behavior of the system is the same as described by O{close_quote}Neil [1] in plasma. Possible mechanisms of the saw-tooth instability are outlined. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
