This patent describes an apparatus for charging a melting furnace from a charging conveyor, the melting furnace having a charging opening in its sidewall, the charging apparatus comprising: a support frame; an upstanding housing mounted on the support frame; a pivotally mounted receiving pan mounted on the support frame, and having a discharge chute on one side adapted to extend into the charging opening in the furnace sidewall; the housing having a first opening in tis sidewall for receiving material conveying means, and a second opening in its sidewall for receiving the discharge chute; and means for moving the apparatus into the charging opening of the furnace and to a remote position.
