The final charge states of the scattered ions and the inelastic energy loss have been measured for single collisions of MeV Kr ions with Kr and Xe targets. The charge states of the scattered ions were measured as functions of scattering angle (from 0.8/sup 0/ to 25/sup 0/) for 0.25, 0.4, 0.6, and 1.0 MeV collision energies for Kr/sup +/ - Kr and 0.4, 0.6, and 1.0 MeV collision energies for Kr/sup +/ - Xe. The total inelastic energy loss of both Kr/sup +/ - Kr and Kr/sup +/ - Xe systems were measured for 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 MeV collision energies, using the scattered-recoil particle coincidence technique. The results show the dependence of inner-shell excitations on the collisions' distance of closest approach, R/sub 0/. The data confirm the quasimolecular nature of heavy ion-atom collisions within the framework of Fano-Lichten model. New M-shell and possibly L-shell excitations have been observed for the first time. For the Kr - Kr case, excitations at 0.39, 0.3, and .22 A of R/sub 0/ are observed; for the Kr - Xe case, excitations at R/sub 0/ = 0.33, 0.22, and 0.12 are reported. The data show general agreement with the molecular potential calculations of Eichler and co-workers.
