Unconventional gas resources under investigation at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) are discussed. Such resources include geopressured and hydropressured aquifers, tight gas formations, coal seams, devonian shales, methane hydrates, watered-out geopressured gas caps, and ultradeep formations. The IGT research staff is conducting laboratory research and computer simulation, field work (including equipment development), and establishmet of test facilities. The IGT has identified major concerns related to the development for pumping which makes primary recovery uneconomic. By performing parametric analyses and preliminary economic assessments, the IGT is defining research required to measure the values of the parameters that introduce the greatest uncertainties into the production and economic projections, determining whether field experiments appear warranted to test production, and identifying specific locations that are potential candidates for field tests.
