Cost analysis of upgrading with energy-efficient motors

This article is designed to guide specifying engineers in making cost-conscious decisions on the replacement of existing motors with energy-efficient types. Specifically discussed are data collection and sources for same, operating efficiency information, formulas for calculating efficiency, the costs associated with motor failure, clauses of manufacturers' warranties, the impact of motor waste heat, and methods of periodic maintenance. The article is intended to counter continuing increases in power costs through information on the upgrading of inefficient motors.
