The authors report on an investigation into the fine structure of casting alloys of the Al-Mg-Zn system as a function of alloying and heat-treatment regimes by the method of diffraction electron microscopy. It is concluded that: the basic hardening phase of casting Al-Mg-Zn alloys is the T-phase (Al/sub 2/Mg/sub 3/Zn/sub 3/), which is segregated at temperatures from 160-170/sup 0/C; and, coagulation of T-phase particles and growth of the Beta-phase lead to a reduction in the strength properties of an aluminum alloy containing 5.5% Mg and 2.5% Zn.
