A Type III Extended Pilot Plant Evaluation of SRC-II vacuum flash drum bottoms obtained from the liquefaction of Kentucky No. 9/14 coal at Ft. Lewis, Washington was successfully completed at Texaco's Montebello Research Laboratory. A total of 31 tons of the SRC-II residue was gasified during eight pilot plant runs at 350 psig. Operating conditions were varied to determine the optimum. The dry syngas produced contained over 90 (vol) percent hydrogen plus carbon monoxide. No major operating problems were experienced and all of the key phases of the gasification were demonstrated. An estimate of operation for a commercial sized gasifier was prepared.
