Sintering and phase transformation of ceriadoped tetragonal ZrO2 polycrystals were investigated using coprecipitated fine-grained zirconia (ceria) powders containing 8% to 12 mol% CeO2 as starting materials. The rate of grain growth of ceria-doped zirconia was faster than that of yttria-doped zirconia. The Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness of ceria-doped zirconia were approx. =10 GPa and 11 to 17 MN/m /SUP 3/2/ , respectively. The tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation in ceria-doped zirconia ceramics was observed over the range 80 to 300C. The phase transformation was greatly accelerated by low-temperature annealing in water. The rate of the phase transformation decreased with increasing CeO2 concentration and with decreasing grain size.
