Extending diesel fuel by carbureting aqueous ethanol

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6239577
Aqueous ethanol was carbureted into a secondary intake line of a Ford 4000, naturally-aspirated, direct-injection diesel engine. The carbureted ethanol and injected diesel fuel were as effective as diesel fuel alone at three-quarter and full load conditions. The maximum amount of diesel energy replaced was 23% at full load with 190 proof ethanol carbureted at a flowrate of 35% by weight of total fuel used. Similar tests conducted carbureting aqueous ethanol and injecting a mixture of 20% soybean oil and 80% diesel fuel gave comparable results.
