A cogeneration system analysis for the University of Houston campus
A detailed cogeneration system analysis has been conducted for the University Park campus of the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. This was part of a study from 1984 to 1986 to evaluate various cogeneration alternatives for Texas State agencies. This analysis was done with the Civil Engineering Laboratory Cogeneration Analysis Program (CELCAP) obtained from the Navy's Civil Engineering Laboratory with an input of the hourly steam and electrical loads in order to optimize the cogeneration system. Other CELCAP inputs were the costs of natural gas, electricity and the operating and maintenance of the boilers. The CELCAP program was initially run without a cogeneration system to determine the base case costs. Several different types and sizes of cogeneration systems were then input into CELCAP to determine the optimal system for the demands of this particular campus. Both simple payback and net present value (NPV) economic analyses were also performed.
