Optical companions of the long-period Cepheid WZ Sagittarii: remains of an open cluster
Photoelectric UBV photometry is presented for twelve 12th- to 15th-magnitude stars lying within 2 arcmin of the 22-day Cepheid WZ Sgr. Eight of these stars are identified as probable B stars of similar reddening (0.56 plus or minus 0.02, relative to a B0 star), and it is argued from star counts and photometric distance estimates that seven of these objects belong to a newly discovered, sparsely populated open cluster that is 1.71 plus or minus 0.06 kpc distant and centered only 3.6 arcmin northwest of WZ Sgr. WZ Sgr is demonstrated to be an excellent candidate for membership in this sparse cluster, based upon its similarity in reddening and age to cluster stars and upon its inferred luminosity of -4.88 plus or minus 0.10 as a cluster member. 19 references.
