Lead and cadmium were determined in soil samples taken from various locations near highways and gas stations, after both acid and acetate extractions, and in leaves after digestion in nitric acid. For soils, acid extraction gave consistently higher results than did acetate. The lead levels in all soils and leaves were sufficiently high that a standard instrument with a conventional burner could be used. The cadmium levels were marginal, and it proved desirable to improve sensitivity by employing a Delves micro-sampling system in conjunction with the burner. Lead in leaves can be determined directly, without prior dissolution, with the Delves system. The distribution of lead in leaves was not homogeneous.
