Policies for an OPEC dollar run

Journal Article · · J. Post Keynes. Econ.; (United States)
The possibility of a sudden, large-scale liquidation of foreign and, more specifically, OPEC dollar assets is considered in this article. Some of the problems that would arise in the event of a liquidation of the official dollar assets of the oil-exporting countries and their attempted conversion into - for purposes of illustration - German marks are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on various lines of action that the US government, working in close cooperation with the German authorities, could take to meet such a crisis and on the external and internal effects of each. The focus is placed on official OPEC funds, not only because of their size, but also because of the special factors that could conceivably cause a large-scale repatriation of these funds at some time in the future.
