Spin reorientation in a magnetic field parallel to the difficult magnetization axis in terbium--gadolinium alloys

An experimental investigation was made of the magnetization, magnetostriction, magnetocaloric effect, and thermal expansion of rare-earch ferromagnetic terbium--godolinium alloys with the hexagonal crystal structure. The results were interpreted as follows. Below the Curie point the ion spins in these alloys are oriented in the basal plane. The application of a magnetic field along the difficult magnetization axis (hexagonal c axis) rotates the total magnetic moment of a layer out of the basal plane and this gives rise to a magnetic phase transition ivolving spin reorientation. The temperature of this transition is close to the Curie point in weak magnetic fields but it decreases in strong magnetic fields. (AIP)
