The ligand substitution process Fe(CN)[sub 5](4-CNpy)[sup 3[minus]] + CN[sup [minus]] (4-CNpy is 4-cyanopyridine) has been studied in various AOT (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulphosuccinate)-oil-water microemulsions at 298.2 K (oil = heptane, octane, iso-octane, monane, decane, undecane, and dodecane). Limiting rate constant values for this reaction show no dependence on surfactant concentration and on the nature of the oil phase at constant molar ratio w = [H[sub 2]O]/[AOT]. For w[ge]20, a decrease in the amount of water present in the system brings about a decrease in the reaction rate. Results are explained by taking into account previous kinetic studies in similar water-in-oil microemulsions.
