Spatial inversion of the population difference of hyperfine sublevels of the ground state of cesium atoms during optical pumping

The letter reports the identification of, an an experimental and theoretical study of, a spatial inversion of the population difference between the hyperfine sublevels of the ground state of cesium atoms during optical pumping. The effect may be summarized by saying that the difference between the populations of the hyperfine sublevels with (F,m/sub F/) = (4,0) and (3,0) in optically thick cells changes sign along the cell.(AIP)
