Why Norwegian gas and oil has international importance

With North Sea probable recoverable reserves in the Norwegian sector estimated at 7 to 14 billion bbl of oil and 35 to 70 trillion CF of gas, Norway is in a position to provide petroleum for a significant segment of the time needed for industrialized countries to take steps to permanently moderate dependence on Mideast oil. According to Columbia Gas System Service Corp., Norway's current annual energy consumption of only 125 million bbl of oil equivalent is expected to reach 281 million bbl by 1990 - half of which will come from hydroelectric power. Thus, Norway's export potential is tremendous. However, the government is moving slowly in selecting the future activity level, fearing the effects petroleum activity will have on the Norwegian economy in terms of manpower availability, flow of funds, and interest rates. A possible means of avoiding these effects while accelerating North Sea development is for Norway to lend the US and Europe its hydrocarbons.
