Coal and energy: the need to exploit the world's most abundant fossil fuel
How the world energy situation emerged over the past quarter of a century and how it may develop the next quarter of a century is examined first. It is an issue that goes beyond the interests of the British coal industry. Since 1973 there has been a rediscovery throughout the world of the importance of energy, and there is a realization of its massive economic, social, and political significance. However uncertain the future may be, it is now of vital importance to make an assessment to avert within the next decade or so what could well be a far more serious world energy crisis than was experienced in 1973 and 1974. The author concludes that, for the world in general, and Britain also in spite of North Sea oil and gas, there is an urgent need to develop Britain's and the world's most abundant fossil fuel - coal.
