Features of the contracted discharge at the electrode wall of an MHD channel coated with SLAG

Journal Article · · High Temp. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

A study is made of the electric disharge at an electrode wall in an MHD channel coated with a slag film. A numerical calculation defines the temperature distribution in the slag film in the region where the cathode or anode arc spots burn. The potential drops in the slag film are determined for diffuse and contracted modes of electrode operation. It is found that the main contribution to the heat flux entering the electrode from the arc spot comes from the Joule heating in the slag film. The calculations provide an explanation of the observed vanishing of cathode spots on slag films at cathode surface temperatures of 1700/sup 0/K an above.
