Energy dependence near threshold of proton-induced positive pion production in simple spin systems

A new magnetic spectrometer has been developed into a proficient pion detection system providing a unique tool for A(p,..pi../sup + -/)A + 1 studies in the near threshold energy region at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF). A study of the energy dependence near threshold for the reactions /sup 12/C(p,..pi../sup +/)/sup 13/C/sub gs/, /sup 12/C(p,..pi../sup +/)/sup 13/C/sub 3/ /sub 09/, /sup 13/C(p,..pi../sup +/)/sup 14/D/sub gs/, and /sup 13/C(p,..pi..-)/sup 14/O/sub gs/ was undertaken. Both differential cross section and analyzing power angular distributions were taken with polarized protons at bombarding energies of 170, 183, and 190 MeV for all reactions with the exception of /sup 13/C(p,..pi../sup -/)/sup 14/O/sub gs/ for which measurements were done only at 183 and 190 MeV. Cross section data were carefully corrected for the decay of the pion in flight from the target to the detectors as well as for losses of pion flux in the detector stack due to multiple scattering. At each bombarding energy the /sup 12/C(p,..pi../sup +/)/sup 13/C/sub gs/ and /sup 12/C(p,..pi../sup +/)/sup 13/C/sub 3/ /sub 09/ data as well as previously existing data at lower energies for these reactions were analyzed in terms of parital wave amplitudes.
