Secure user authentication in a distributed computing environment

This is a description of a user authentication system for a distributed computing environment. The basis of this system is a secure communication path where the information exchanged is protected from release, modification and replay. The distributed computing environment refers to a collection of independently administered networks, connected by gateways, with varying levels of trust between the networks.
