Integrated two-stage liquefaction. Topical technical progress report startup of Illinois No. 6 program, October 1, 1981-March 30, 1982

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6231997
This program combines a research study on Catalytic Expanded Bed Hydro-processing of Coal Extracts and the operation of an Integrated Two-Stage Liquefaction Process Development Unit. The integrated operation with Illinois No. 6 coal was started and the recycle solvent was brought to equilibrium composition during the course of a 54-day LC-Fining run. The integrated process development unit began operation with the second coal of this program, Illinois No. 6, Burning Star Mine. The severity of the SCT reaction was reduced by lowering the outlet temperature from 865/sup 0/F to 830/sup 0/F, and reducing pressure from 2450 psig to 2000 psig. These changes resulted in a heavier SCT product, containing more extract and less distillates. However, a net yield of distillates was maintained. LC-Fining results closely followed Run 3LCF7. Conversion activity was unaffected by catalyst age after the first 300 pound extract feed per pound of catalyst, but some reduction in denitrogenation activity was observed throughout the run. This reduced activity was caused by an increasing nitrogen content in the unconverted extract. Distillate products contained less than 0.2 percent nitrogen throughout the run. Deashing of the extract made from Illinois No. 6 coal was more responsive to changes in antisolvent/feed ratio and antisolvent strength than was the Indiana V extract. Consequently, fewer plugging problems were encountered and deashing performance improved. Extract recoveries of over 80 percent were achieved. After LC-Fining Run 3LCF8 was concluded, several modifications were made to the process development unit to: (a) reduce hold-up time of feeds and recycle streams in holding tanks, (b) reduce emission of coal dust to the building, and (c) install interstage sampling capability in the LC-Fining reaction section.
