Differential thermal study of coal pitch. [Magnitogorsk Integrated Iron and Steel Works-USSR]

The pitches were analyzed by differential thermal analysis in air in the 20 to 800/sup 0/C range at a heating rate of 10/sup 0/C/min. The relative weight loss and thermal effects were calculated using sodium bicarbonate as a standard. The results showed that the nature of the thermal behavior of pitches is affected by the nature and quantity of anthracene or benzene added at the tar distillation stage. Endothermic effects were enhanced at 400 to 500/sup 0/C, perhaps explaining the destructive processes in the pitches. A decrease is observed in the exothermic effects at 680 to 700/sup 0/C leading to the decrease in the polycondensation process. 1 figure, 3 tables.
