The diets of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) on shrub-steppe rangeland of south central Washington were estimated by microhistological examination of fecal pellets. On rangelands, it is necessary to know the diets of herbivores and availability of forage plants to provide information for formulating better management programs for both plants and animals. The purpose of this study was to determine the dietary habits of mule deer at three locations on the 200 area plateau of the Hanford Reservation in south central Washington. The study area has not been grazed by livestock since 1943, but small mammals such as the black-tailed hare (Lepus californicus) and ground squirrels (Citellus townsendi) do feed there.
