Development of a high voltage crowbar

In high voltage applications, a multi-stage ignitron crowbar can be used as an effective energy diverter. The advantage of a crowbar over conventional spark gap is its ability to fire at any desired voltage. In this article, development of a prototype 300 kV multi-stage crowbar has been described with emphasis on the problems associated with achieving reliable and spark free operation.
