Ba(Nb/sub 3/O/sub 8/)/sub 2/. H/sub 2/O

The structure of the lamellar niobate Ba(Nb/sub 3/O/sub 8/)/sub 2/ . H/sub 2/O has been studied by x-ray powder diffraction. This orthorhombic niobete crytallizes in the space group Immm with a = 8.62(2) A, b = 21.61(4) A, c = 3.811(4) A. A structural model has been established, which shows that the (Nb/sub 3/O/sub 8/)/sub 2/) layers are similar to those of KNb/sub 3/O/sub 8/, but that one layer out of two is displaced of a/2 with respect to the potassium niobate, leading to a cubic coordination of barium (to be compared to the prismatic trigonal coordination of potassium). The position of the water molecule and the dehydration into the isotypic niobate Ba(Nb/sub 3/O/sub 8/)/sub 2/ is discussed.
